Stone kitchen counter tops can mean a few different things varying from granite and slate and many more which all have different properties.  One thing that all stones have in common is a natural grace due to the very nature of the material.  Most stones are mined from a quarry and unique to itself so it is close to impossible to match two pieces together, this can be a good or bad thing depending on the look you are going for in your kitchen.

All stones, with the one exception of soapstone, need to be periodically sealed to ensure that they are not damaged by something being spilled on them and ruining the surface.  All stones have their own unique look within the material, such as the range of color of marble to the versatility and look of granite.  Another common trait between all stones is the ease of maintenance all you need to do to keep them looking their best, other than sealing of course, is to wipe them down with a pH neutral cleaning agent to make sure there is no adverse effect.

Pros:

-Resilience

-Ease of maintenance

-Will not stain or fade once they are sealed correctly

Cons:

-Not forgiving if breakables are dropped

-When not properly maintained stone can turn into an eyesore

-Grouting is needed if you are going to install stone in more then one piece

Because .  As far as installing it yourself it is not recommended because of the complexity along with if you drop it you have just wasted a lot of money.  When durability and elegance are the main concerns for your kitchen countertop material then stone kitchen countertops are an ideal choice.
